CAGE is responding to a call by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims for a working definition of Islamophobia. Drawing on our work in the field of securitisation and counter-terrorism policy, we propose that any definition of Islamophobia must include its institutional and structural forms, not merely the interpersonal. Furthermore, we advise that a working definition of Islamophobia must be expansive enough to hold power to account, when Islamophobia is codified into law and governance. In this submission, CAGE present evidence specifically on our understanding of how Islamophobia presents in the space of national security and respond to the questions posed by the APPG on a working definition.
