New moving documentary captures Moazzam Begg’s return to Afghanistan and Bagram
London - Released this week by Al Jazeera’s Witness programme, 'Echoes of Bagram' is a powerfully evocative documentary that chronicles the journey of Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo and Bagram prisoner, as he returns to Afghanistan for the first time since his release from Guantanamo Bay in 2005.
Moazzam Begg’s return to Afghanistan also sees him meet the family of Muhammad Rahim, the last Afghan prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay, as part of CAGE International’s efforts in securing his release. His firsthand account provides a rare glimpse into the human toll of the US-led War on Terror and the occupation of Afghanistan.
The film offers a compelling insight into the deep impact the notorious torture site Bagram detention centre had on its victims, as well as the overall human toll of the US-led War on Terror and the occupation of Afghanistan.
Moazzam Begg, Senior Director at CAGE International and former prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, said:
“Returning to Bagram was a dream and nightmare in one. But the dream overshadowed the nightmare and this once-in-a-lifetime experience can now be shared with all.”
