Petition against the use of Drones

October 15, 2015
Audio

Last month Prime Minister David Cameron sent drones in Syria in the targeted killing of two British citizens, no justification was provided for these killings. CAGE calls on our supporters to sign this petition calling on the Prime Minister to stop the use of drones for targeted killing.

Last month Prime Minister David Cameron sent drones in Syria in the targeted killing of two British citizens, no justification was provided for these killings.

Drone targeted killings can never be justified outside the context of a declared war zone.  Pre-emptive drone strikes can only be justified if there is a concrete, specific and imminent thereat posed, and if lethal force is necessary and proportional. If a suspect can be captured or detained in a less harmful means and it is not followed up, any targeted killing that is executed will be an extrajudicial killing and/or murder by international human rights law standards.

The use of drones has been highlighted recently by the Intercept with their recent publishing of The Drone Papers.
