London – Phantom Parrot, an award nominated documentary that chronicles the efforts of CAGE International Managing Director, Muhammad Rabbani, to safeguard the confidentiality of torture survivor Ali Al-Marri, is now released in cinemas across the UK.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Kate Stonehill, the film provides an intimate look into the challenges faced by activists campaigning against state surveillance and police coercion.

From March 15th to April 19th, the screenings of Phantom Parrot will be held in 13 cities across the UK, including London, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, and Glasgow. The film will also be featured in The Hague at the Movies That Matter Film Festival where it has been nominated for an award under the activist category. It has also premiered at the SR Film Festival in New York, the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival in Washington DC, the Karama Human Rights Film Festival in Amman and the Media Festival Skopje in Macedonia among others.

Since its world premiere at The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival in March 2023, Phantom Parrot has garnered praise for its captivating storytelling. Critics commend Kate Stonehill's adept cinematography and the portrayal of Muhammad Rabbani as an inspirational figure, urging viewers to take action against injustice. Receiving 4 out 5 stars by the Guardian, the film has been likened to the Citizenfour documentary, which exposed the NSA’s domestic espionage programme in the US.

Muhammad Rabbani, Managing Director for CAGE International, said:

“Since its world premier at the Copenhagen Film Festival in Denmark last year, Phantom Parrot has been screened in theatres across the world, from the SR Film Festival in New York to the Karama Human Rights Film Festival in Amman. Now it is time for the people of the UK to witness firsthand the dangers of digital surveillance and the threat it poses to our rights and freedoms as citizens of this country. From London to Edinburgh, Phantom Parrot will enlighten the masses on how vulnerable and easily accessible our data is to the state’s security apparatus. I am looking forward to taking part in the in-depth and stimulating discussion with audiences across the country.”

Kate Stonehill, Director of Phantom Parrot, said:

“After a successful festival run at festivals including CPH:DOX (Copenhagen), Sheffield Doc/Fest (U.K.), and Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival (Washington, D.C.), I'm thrilled to now be able to bring the story of Phantom Parrot to the wider U.K. public. The film raises vital questions about civil liberties in the digital age and our post-screening discussions have been a true highlight for me in releasing this film. As we continue our theatrical run, I'm looking forward to more thought-provoking conversations with audiences across the country.”
