London - Commenting on the appointment of William Shawcross as the independent reviewer of Prevent, CAGE Managing Director Muhammad Rabbani said: “Shawcross’s appointment demonstrates the government has given up on even pretending that it cares about integrity in Public Office. Shawcross is embedded in a network of Islamophobia having been a former director of the Islamophobic Henry Jackson Society, he targetted Muslim charities during his tenure as head of the Charity Commission, he said “Europe and Islam is one of the greatest, most terrifying problems of our future”, he supports torture methods like waterboarding, and he is a Guantanamo Bay apologist.” “We objected to the ‘review’ and insisted on our principled call to end Prevent, because there is no way to reform a fundamentally racist and Islamophobic policy. The appointment of Shawcross, following the shameless appointment of Lord Carlile previously, should lead all civil society actors to echo our call for ending Prevent and to robustly boycott this sham of a review.” “We call upon civil society to adopt our 8-point plan, which is endorsed by over 100 academics and campaigners [1], to move beyond this legacy of failed policies and towards healthy, safe societies as outlined on our report “Beyond Prevent” [2].” Editor’s notes: CAGE is a UK based, independent advocacy organisation working to empower communities impacted by the “War on Terror”. The organisation highlights and campaigns against repressive state policies, developed as part of increasing securitisation. In doing so, we strive for a world free from oppression and injustice.
