Victims and survivors of the War on Terror often suffer from the stigma attached to the allegations they face. As a result, they find individuals and organisations, Muslims or non-Muslims unwilling to assist. CAGE is often the only organisation where people can seek professional advice in a non-judgmental and in a religiously and culturally sensitive environment.
Our casework forms the backbone of the organisation. We provide advice and access to solicitors for people facing discrimination and oppression as a result of PREVENT and other counter-terrorism measures. We have recently launched a Helpline to provide a confidential service to individuals who have nowhere else to turn. Recently, a sister who came to us said that CAGE was the only organisation who had helped her.
We also continue to tell the stories of people affected by the War on Terror, in their own words. Through our Human Voices in the War on Terror initiative, those who have fallen prey to unjust counter-terrorism measures, those who have been invited to be informants, and mothers who have had children interviewed by PREVENT are able to tell their stories for a global audience. In so doing, we give a voice to the voiceless and help eradicate the sense of victimhood for one of an empowered survivor. We empower a community under siege and we equip individuals with the legal tools to fight back. Through this sharing of stories and information, and through the examples of the leaders among us, we honour and build courage among Muslims. Being able to tell their stories knowing that they are helping others, gives people relief and inspires others to take a stand against oppressive policies.
