Join us for an empowering evening where we honour the heroes of our Ummah, from those steadfast in Gaza to those who've endured in Guantanamo. Together, we'll delve into the wellsprings of their resilience and resistance.

Speakers

Ali Hammuda

Shaykh Ali Hammuda is a UK national of Palestinian origin, he gained bachelor's and Masters degrees in Architecture & Planning from the University of the West of England, before achieving a BA in Shari'ah from al-Azhar University in Egypt. Shaykh Ali is the author of several books including The Daily Revivals, The Ten Lanterns, and The Friday Reminder. He delivers sermons, lectures, and regular classes across the country. He is currently based in Wales and is a visiting Imām at al-Manar Centre in Cardiff, and also a senior researcher and lecturer for the Muslim Research & Development Foundation in London.

Dr Azzam Tamimi

Dr Azzam Tamimi is an outspoken and well-known British Palestinian academic and political activist. He writes and lectures on issues relating to Islamic political thought and Middle Eastern politics. Dr Tamimi received his BSc in Combined Sciences from the University of Sunderland in 1979, before completing a PhD in Political Theory from the University of Westminster in 1998. He is currently the Chairman and Editor in Chief of Al Hiwar TV Channel. He has been a visiting professor at Kyoto University (2004) and Nagoya University (2006). 

He makes regular television appearances for both English language and Arabic media outlets such as AlJazeera and Press TV, and frequently publishes opinion pieces in the Guardian and other newspapers.

Dr Tamimi is the author of several books on Middle Eastern and Islamic politics including Hamas: Unwritten Chapters (2007), Rachid Ghannouchi: A Democrat within Islamism (2001).

Moazzam Begg

Senior Director

A British-born Muslim, Moazzam Begg is a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner and outreach director for CAGE.

After his release, he became one of the most prominent public-speakers and Muslim advocates for justice and dialogue. 

He is the author of the best-seller Enemy Combatant in which he recounts his experience as an innocent man detained and torture at Guantanamo, Bagram and Kandahar.

The Muslim 500 listed him as one of the 500 “most influential Muslims” in the world.
The New Statesman listed him in the top 50 “Heroes of our time”.

He has travelled extensively to investigate state abuses and western complicity in torture including to Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Syria.

A direct eye-witness to the conflicts in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Syria, his life has been recorded by the Columbia University Oral History project, and the BBC Storyville documentary, The Confession.
